At Teys Australia, sustainability is a guiding principle that shapes our operations, investments, and partnerships. Our Tamworth processing facility exemplifies this commitment through a diverse mix of environmental initiatives that support both local and industry-wide progress.
Innovative Water Reuse and Industry Collaboration
In partnership with the Australian Meat Processor Corporation (AMPC), the Tamworth facility has been actively trialling a portable water recycling unit as part of a national research initiative into advanced non-potable water reuse. Non-potable water, while unsuitable for human consumption, can be repurposed for operational use when treated appropriately.
Since 2022, three AMPC units have rotated through six red meat processing sites, treating various raw water streams. Tamworth achieved a significant milestone by successfully using recycled water in a plant cooling condenser—an industry first. This breakthrough followed rigorous government approvals and hazard management planning, setting a new benchmark for sustainable water use in meat processing.
AMPC’s Matt Deegan commended Teys for its exemplary teamwork and compliance, noting that Tamworth’s success has instilled confidence across the sector. We proudly recognise our Tamworth team for their dedication to advancing sustainability through this pioneering R&D project.

Solar Energy and Emissions Reduction
In July 2023, Tamworth also commissioned a 2MW ground-mounted solar installation, marking a major step toward energy independence and emissions reduction. The system has already delivered a 30% reduction in electricity consumption at the site, generated enough energy to power 510 homes, and cut CO₂ emissions by over 2,100 tonnes.
This initiative is part of Teys’ broader Utilities Reduction Program (URP), which aims to reduce water, waste, and energy across all operations. The URP empowers teams to identify and implement pragmatic solutions that deliver measurable environmental benefits.
Team Commitment and Industry Impact
The Tamworth team’s proactive engagement with industry partners, regulatory bodies, and internal sustainability programs reflects the values that underpin Teys’ mission: Feeding People, Enriching Lives. Their work improves operational efficiency and contributes to a more resilient and responsible red meat sector.
The Tamworth team are an example of how our people are the driving force behind our environmental progress. Their passion, innovation, and collaboration ensure that Teys continues to support the industry journey of sustainable meat processing.
We applaud the team for their commitment to furthering the sustainability of our industry through this key R&D project with AMPC.
